History

In the late 1980s, a group of grassroots community workers and local government representatives came together to explore the establishment of an Illawarra Regional Council of Social Services. In 1993, that dream became a reality.

History continued..

This was an era of significant change and reform, and many not-for-profit organisations felt unable to speak out because they feared losing funding. This incredible group of dedicated individuals decided to establish a body that could speak out on sectoral and community issues without fear or favour.

For many years, the Illawarra Forum (as we were then known) was based out of a shopfront in the beautiful village of Jamberoo. We were very fortunate to have been gifted a hand-drawn logo by Aunty Lorraine Brown of Coomaditchie United Aboriginal Corporation.

While we have changed our name, our representational footprint, and our location, we remain true to our roots. Thirty years ago, the Illawarra Forum was founded on the principles of social justice, and we proudly maintain that ethos to this day.

“What we have continued to be is a strong voice for the sector, and can speak out on issues without other services being targeted. We have come such a long way since we began, I think we’ve built long lasting relationships, which means we get the support we need in regards to government reforms, changing funding levels, changes to government policies and accountability across the sector”
